On 9 May, Marbella City Council presented Patrick Op de Beeck, a founding shareholder of Op de Beeck & Worth, with a diploma in recognition of his work to promote the ideals of the European Union.

As part of Europe Day, the council held an event at Hospital Real de la Misericordia ("Hospitalillo") to honour European citizens who have chosen to live in Marbella and engage in the city's everyday life.

Patrick Op de Beeck, who has been a Marbella resident for more than 40 years, represented Belgian citizens at the event. The event was attended by some of the city's European residents who have contributed the most to integrating that group into the city.

José Luis Hernández, Marbella's Councillor responsible for Tourism, stressed that this honour is awarded to "EU citizens whose characteristics and virtues allow them to represent the entire community of European citizens in Marbella; educational establishments that have an outstanding commitment to social cohesion; and associations that best represent that social commitment". "It is important to us that you know we appreciate having you in the city", Marbella's Tourism Councillor added.

Mr Hernández also pointed out that "more than 140 nationalities live together in Marbella. Ours is an open, cosmopolitan and hospitable city. Having foreign citizens, especially European citizens, here contributes to enriching our city."

Lastly, in the name of the city's Spanish community, the councillor thanked the European citizens who have "chosen to live in Marbella" and stressed their "recognition of that group's great social commitment".
